TAREY BHIR GUIDE

Why Should I Visit

The sheer beauty of the Himalayan landscape at Tarey Bhir, add to that a minimal number of tourists make it worth visiting. At a precipitous height of around 10,000 feet in South Sikkim, Tarey Bhir is a gorgeous cliff overlooking the lower ranges of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong range of the Himalayas. Located in a small hamlet near Sadam, it is rarely on the list of travellers who come visiting South Sikkim.

How Do I Get There

A walk along Tarey Bhir makes for a thrilling day trip from Namchi, a major town in South Sikkim. To get here you will have to hire a cab that goes towards Sadam from Namchi. On the way, the road brances into two and you have to take the route that goes towards the right. Tarey Bhir is at a distance of about 16 km from Namchi, near a small village called Sukhbarey. A shabby state tourism board marks the beginning of the walk.

When To Visit

You can visit Sikkim anytime between the months of March to May or September to November. The weather is usually great during these months with clear and sunny days making it ideal to savour the beauty of the hills. The months between December and February are usually very cold. A lot of tourists, nonetheless, prefer winters. Monsoon i.e the months from May to August usually experience heavy rainfall making the precarious walk along Tarey Bhir slightly dangerous.

The Finer Details

A walk along Tarey Bhir makes for a thrilling day trip from Namchi, a major town in South Sikkim. To get here you will have to hire a cab that goes towards Sadam from Namchi. On the way, the road brances into two and you have to take the route that goes towards the right. Tarey Bhir is at a distance of about 16 km from Namchi, near a small village called Sukhbarey. A shabby state tourism board marks the beginning of the walk.

The walk begins with a paved pathway that goes downhill. The precarious yet is picturesque walkway built on top of a mountain that is covered with bottle green pines on one side and a lighter green carpet of grass, moss and little shrubs on the other. Reminiscent of bridges and pathways built in the mountainous regions of China, the walkway leads to the edge of a cliff offering sweeping views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. You can also see the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills which are at a lower elevation from here. It also offers gorgeous views of the confluence of two rivers, Teesta and Rangit, that meander through the valley below.

Travel Tips

Do not litter the area and do bring back your garbage with you. Avoid plucking any plants and wear appropriate walking shoes. If you suffer from a fear of heights or vertigo then this walk might not be the best idea for you.
