Planning a Multi-State North East Trip: What Most Travellers Get Wrong
TL;DR: The mistake is trying to see too many states at once. Guwahati is your hub, permits only apply to four states, and the right route depends on your days and season. Here is the short version, from a team that runs these roads.
- Guwahati is a hub, not a stop: Almost every North East trip starts and ends here (best rail and air links). A half-day covers Kamakhya Temple and the Brahmaputra ghats before you head out.
- Do not over-pack the map: Assam + Meghalaya needs 6 to 7 days minimum. Adding Arunachal's Tawang circuit needs 4 to 5 more, so 10 to 12 days. A full 4 to 5 state circuit needs 14 to 16 days. Squeeze it tighter and the trip becomes long drives and early checkouts.
- Permits are simpler than they sound: Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit only for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura need none. If your route skips those four, permits are a non-issue. We handle the ILP either way.
- Kaziranga has a season: The park is shut roughly mid-May to October for monsoon. Do not build a rhino trip in that window.
- Time it to a festival if you can: Hornbill (Nagaland, December), Ziro Music Festival (Arunachal, September), Rongali Bihu (Assam, April). Book months ahead for these.
Which states to pair, and for how long
| Time you have | Best pairing | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 5 days | Meghalaya + a slice of Assam | Guwahati, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki |
| 6 to 7 days | Assam + Meghalaya (the Triangle) | Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Guwahati |
| 10 to 12 days | Assam + Meghalaya + Arunachal | Add Bomdila, Dirang and the Tawang circuit (ILP) |
| 14 to 16 days | Full circuit, 4 to 5 states | Comprehensive; needs careful sequencing |
Tell us your dates: our travel experts can map a customised North East itinerary around your days, interests and the season you are travelling in, and we will plan the right route for you.
Note: Indian citizens require an ILP to visit Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, and a PAP to visit border-adjacent areas in Sikkim.

North East Tour Packages: FAQs
How much does a North East tour package cost?
North East tour packages cost ₹12,999 to ₹59,999 per person (as of September 2026), depending on duration, states covered and hotel category. A 3N/4D Meghalaya and Assam trip starts at ₹12,999; a 6N/7D North East Triangle covering Kaziranga, Shillong and Guwahati is around ₹29,999. Flights and train fares are not included.
What is included in your North East tour packages?
Hotels with breakfast, all transfers and sightseeing in a private AC cab, airport or railway pick-up and drop, Inner Line Permits where needed, and applicable taxes. Not included: airfare or train fare, Kaziranga safaris and entry fees unless specified, and personal expenses.
Do I need a permit for a North East India tour?
Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) only for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram (as of September 2026). Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura need no permit. Sikkim needs no ILP but uses a Protected Area Permit for some high-altitude zones. When you book with us, we arrange every permit your itinerary needs. Foreign nationals face different rules (Protected Area Permit for most states), so tell us your nationality when you enquire.
How many days do I need for a North East trip?
6 to 7 days is the sweet spot for a first trip, covering Assam and Meghalaya (Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji). Add 4 to 5 days for Arunachal's Tawang circuit, for a 10 to 12 day route. A full 4 to 5 state circuit needs 14 to 16 days.
Can I customize a North East package?
Yes. States covered, hotel category, extra nights, a Kaziranga safari add-on and a Tawang extension can all be changed. Share your preferences on the enquiry form or WhatsApp and our team sends a revised itinerary and price.
Which season is best for a North East India tour?
October to March is the most reliable window: clear skies and pleasant weather across most states, though December to January is very cold and snowy in high-altitude Arunachal and Sikkim. April to May is good and mostly dry, except Meghalaya, which starts raining in May. June to September is a heavy monsoon, best for waterfalls but with road-block risk and Kaziranga closed.
Is it safe for families to travel in North East India?
Yes. North East India is generally safe and welcoming for families, with low crime and warm local hospitality. The main planning factors are long mountain drives and weather, not safety. We pace family itineraries gently and use trained hill-route drivers.
How do I reach North East India?
Fly or take a train to Guwahati (Assam), the main gateway, served by direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai. For Sikkim, fly to Bagdogra (IXB) or train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP). Most packages include transfers from Guwahati onward.
How much does a North East trip cost for a couple?
Roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 total excluding flights (as of September 2026), so ₹12,999 to ₹59,999 per person by duration and states covered, plus return flights to Guwahati and spending money.
How does booking and payment work?
Pay an advance (amount decided at enquiry) to confirm after we finalise your itinerary; the balance is due before departure or on arrival, before services begin. The full itinerary is shared before any payment. We accept wire transfer (NEFT/RTGS).
What is your cancellation policy?
10% is retained for cancellations 30+ days before arrival, 30% at 15 to 29 days, 50% at 7 days, and no refund within 48 hours or for a no-show. Bookings for 20 Dec to 05 Jan and all wildlife safaris are non-refundable.
