Planning North East India as a Region: How to Make the Most of a Multi-State Journey

Northeast India is eight states sharing one of the most biodiverse and culturally layered corners of the subcontinent. The challenge for most travellers is not whether to go, but how to sequence it. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim each have a distinct character, and trying to see all of them in a single trip without a clear logic usually ends in a rushed, surface-level experience. Here is how to think about it.

The Permit Landscape in 2026

The permit situation across Northeast India is simpler than most travellers expect. As of 2026, Indian nationals do not require any permit to enter Assam, Meghalaya, or Tripura. The states that still requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian citizens are Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur and it is applied for online through the state government portal. Foreign nationals face different rules: most northeastern states require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreign visitors except Tripura. If your itinerary does not include the four states: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur, permit logistics are not a factor at all.

Guwahati as Your Anchor

Almost every Northeast trip begins and ends in Guwahati, the region’s only major city with strong rail and air connectivity to the rest of India. It is worth treating it as a logistics hub rather than a destination to rush through. A half-day on arrival, covering Kamakhya Temple and the Brahmaputra ghats, is well-spent. Most itineraries then radiate outward: east toward Kaziranga and Jorhat for Assam, south toward Shillong and Cherrapunji for Meghalaya, or northeast toward Tezpur and Bhalukpong for Arunachal Pradesh. The direction you go first depends on your primary interest and the season.

Which States to Pair, and for How Long

A focused trip through Assam and Meghalaya needs a minimum of six to seven days to do justice to Kaziranga, Shillong, and Cherrapunji. Adding Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang circuit) requires an additional four to five days and the ILP, bringing a combined itinerary to ten to twelve days. A full Northeast circuit covering four to five states comfortably requires fourteen to sixteen days. Trying to compress this into less time produces a trip defined by long drives and early checkout times.

The Northeast’s festival calendar is one of its strongest draws: the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland (December), the Ziro Music Festival in Arunachal Pradesh (September), Rongali Bihu in Assam (April), and Ali Ai Ligang among the Mishing tribe (February) are all experiences that shape an itinerary in meaningful ways. Booking well in advance is essential for peak festival travel.

Putting together a Northeast itinerary that makes geographic and experiential sense is something our travel experts at eSikkim Tourism are well-placed to help with. We can design a customised North East tour that reflects your available time, interests, and the seasonal window you are travelling in. Get in touch and we will map out the right route for you.

When you book a North East India package with us, our team makes sure to get all the required ILP/PAP. This helps in visiting sensitive areas (if they are covered in your itinerary) without any hassles or worries.

Here is a table to show which state required what kind of permit for Indian and Foreign nationals:

What to eat in North East India?

Add some flavour in your trip to North East India by trying diverse and mouth-watering dishes of the regions. North East Indian cuisine is a collective term but includes different types of food and eating habits from across the region. The Northeastern cuisine is a delight for omnivores. However, worry not if you are a vegetarian, you will also get plenty of veg options in the region too. Here is what you can eat while touring North East India.

  1. Momo: A popular street food for some, a wholesome meal for some, a plateful of steaming hot momo is too hard to resist. On your northeastern India trip, you can never go wrong with momo.
  2. Thukpa: Eaten all over north east but especially in Sikkim, Thukpa is a soupy noodle dish made with veggies, chillies, sauces and meat.
  3. Sel Roti: Rice batter and sugar deep fried in hot oil until brown and what you get is the sweet dessert sel roti. Having Nepalese origin, this dish is eaten in Sikkim.
  4. Pika Pila: Made from bamboo shoots, pork, and king chilies, Pika Pila is a pickle dish made by the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.
  5. Chhang or Apong: Chhang is a special wine consumed in Sikkim made from fermented rice or barley. Apong is a beer made from fermented rice and is consumed widely.
  6. Stews and Rice: Stews and Rice is a common dish consumed all across the North East region, though the ingredients and preparation methods may change from state to state.

Souvenirs to Buy on North East Tour

Look for souvenirs that will remind you of this beautiful region even after your safe and happy return. On your North East India trip, you can buy pickles, jams, organic honey, tea, spices, etc. Alternatively, you can look for traditional jewellery, prayer bowls, shawls and scarves, jackets, handicrafts, bamboo and cane products, etc.

North East India Tours: Inner Line Permits

Since some of the North east states share international borders with China, they are heavily guarded and require permits to visit. These Inner Line Permits are mostly required in Sikkim to visit several passes or lakes or Arunachal Pradesh. When you book a North East India package with us, our team makes sure to get all the required ILPs. This helps in visiting sensitive places (if they are covered in your itinerary) without any hassles or worries.

Our family trip to North east India was absolutely fantastic! We covered Assam and Meghalaya over 7 wonderful days, and every moment was memorable. My kids were thrilled by the boating experience at Umiam Lake. It was a highlight they still talk about. What truly made this trip special was having enough time on the itinerary to visit the Maa Kamakhya Temple and receive her blessings, something very close to our hearts. A big thank you to eSikkim and their team, and our tour guide Suresh for their incredible support throughout the journey. Highly recommended for families.

As someone planning a North east trip for the first time, I had a hundred questions such as ILPs for Arunachal, PAP documentation, stays, cabs, you name it. The team at eSikkim Tourism patiently listened to every concern and guided me through the entire process without making me feel overwhelmed. Booking the tour package was a breeze, and from the moment I arrived to the time I departed, everything was executed smoothly. We covered Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, a trip I'll cherish forever. Truly a stress-free experience.

I had booked a custom North east tour package (only Assam), and it was perfectly tailored to my preferences. Over 5 days, we explored some of Assam's most iconic destinations. From Kaziranga National Park, tea gardens, and Majuli River Island, to the vibrant Kamakhya Temple, and the historic Sivasagar. The morning safari at Kaziranga was an experience I'll never forget. I was a little nervous about it initially, but it turned out to be magical. My little one was over the moon spotting rhinos in the wild. The stays were comfortable and well-chosen throughout.

North east India had always been on my bucket list, but I honestly had no idea where to begin. The team at eSikkim took away all the guesswork and planned a perfect trip tailored to my interests. They even accommodated my requests for adventure activities like river rafting and paragliding which added a real thrill to the journey. A 4-day itinerary covering Meghalaya and Assam turned out to be just the right pace. It was fulfilling yet not rushed. Can't thank them enough for turning a dream trip into reality.

I had a very specific vision for my trip. I wanted to immerse myself in the culture, arts, and crafts of the North east, and they delivered beyond expectations. I requested a fully customised 5-day itinerary covering Assam and Meghalaya with a focus on cultural experiences, and they designed it beautifully. The highlight for me was exploring Majuli Island in Assam. Learning the local traditions, handcrafted masks, and sattriya dance forms was deeply enriching. It felt less like tourism and more like a genuine cultural journey. Absolutely fabulous experience.

I'll admit, the paperwork around PAPs and ILPs had me a bit anxious before the trip. But the good folks at eSikkim Tourism handled everything promptly and professionally, I didn't have to worry about anything. When I requested a hotel upgrade, they arranged it seamlessly with a transparent additional charge. The cab rides throughout the 9-day journey across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya were smooth and comfortable, and the drivers were not just skilled but also incredibly knowledgeable. They added so much depth to the experience with their local insights. I'll definitely be booking with them again.
