Arunachal Pradesh Trip: The State That Rewards Preparation
TL;DR: Arunachal needs an Inner Line Permit for Indians (a Protected Area Permit for foreigners), applied online about one to two weeks ahead. Tawang sits at 3,048 m and the drive crosses Sela Pass at 4,170 m, now made far more reliable by the all-weather Sela Tunnel (open since 2024). Ziro, at 1,500 m, is a gentler and culturally distinct alternative. We handle the permits and pace the altitude so the trip does not punish you for it.
- The permit you cannot skip: Every Indian needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP); foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP), issued to groups of two or more through a registered operator. There is no on-arrival ILP, so we apply one to two weeks ahead, especially in peak season (October to March).
- Tawang is more than a photo stop: At 3,048 m it is India's largest monastery, second largest in the world after the Potala, and the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama (1683). It is a living Gelug centre, best seen during Torgya (January) or Losar (February to March).
- Sela Pass and the tunnel: The Tawang drive crosses Sela Pass at 4,170 m. The Sela Tunnel (open 2024) now gives all-weather access and has cut the road closures that used to wreck April and October trips.
- Ziro is a different Arunachal: A flat plateau at 1,500 m, home to the Apatani, whose rice-fish paddy farming and facial tattoos are unlike anything else in the Northeast. Time it with the Ziro Music Festival every September.
- Tawang and Ziro sit on opposite sides of the state: Covering both comfortably needs 11 to 13 days. Short trips should pick one.
Altitude, and what to plan around it
| Place | Altitude | What sets it apart | Plan-ahead note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tawang Monastery | 3,048 m | Largest monastery in India; birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama | Reached via Sela Pass; go through the Sela Tunnel |
| Sela Pass | 4,170 m | Among India's highest motorable passes | Acclimatise; carry layers even in summer |
| Bumla Pass (LAC) | ~4,633 m | Indo-China border; civilian visits by permit | Extra permit (border pass) needed |
| Ziro Valley | 1,500 m | Apatani rice-fish farming; UNESCO tentative list | Time it with the Ziro Music Festival (September) |

Arunachal Pradesh Tour Packages: FAQs
How much does an Arunachal Pradesh tour package cost?
Arunachal Pradesh tour packages cost ₹39,999 to ₹59,999 per person (as of August 2026) for 8 to 13-day trips, twin-sharing. The 8N/9D Tawang circuit starts at ₹39,999; the 12N/13D three-state grand tour is ₹59,999. Flights are not included. Shorter Tawang-only circuits can be arranged on request.
What is included in your Arunachal Pradesh tour packages?
Hotels and homestays with breakfast, a private 4x4 with a trained mountain driver, all sightseeing and transfers, Inner Line Permit arrangements, and all taxes. Not included: flights or train fare, restricted-area permits such as Bumla Pass, and personal expenses.
Can I customize an Arunachal package?
Yes. You can swap Ziro in or out, add Pasighat or Mechuka, change the hotel category, or adjust the number of days. Share your dates and preferences and our team sends a revised itinerary and price.
Which duration is best for a first Arunachal trip?
8N/9D is the sweet spot for a first Arunachal trip. It covers Bhalukpong, Dirang, Tawang and Bomdila from Guwahati at a pace that lets you acclimatise to the Sela Pass altitude without rushing. Add days if you also want Ziro.
Do I need a permit for Arunachal Pradesh?
Yes. Every Indian citizen needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP). Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) instead, issued to groups of two or more through a registered operator. We arrange the ILP for you; apply about one to two weeks ahead.
Can Tawang and Ziro be covered in the same trip?
Yes, but not on a short trip. Tawang and Ziro sit on opposite sides of the state, so covering both comfortably needs 11 to 13 days. Our Magical and Mystical Northeast packages are built for this; shorter trips are better focused on one.
How does booking and payment work?
Pay an advance to hold the booking once your itinerary is finalised; the balance is due before departure or on arrival. Peak dates (Christmas and New Year) need full advance. We accept wire transfer (NEFT/RTGS). The full itinerary is shared before any payment.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges are 10% at 30 or more days before arrival, 30% at 15 to 29 days, 50% at 7 days, and no refund within 48 hours or for no-shows. Bookings for 20 December to 05 January are non-refundable. Wildlife safaris such as Kaziranga are non-refundable once booked.
Is Arunachal Pradesh safe for families and first-timers?
Yes. Arunachal is safe and welcoming for families, including kids and senior citizens, as long as the altitude is paced. The main planning points are the ILP, the mountain roads, and the cold at Sela Pass and Tawang even in summer, all of which a local operator handles for you.
Ready to Plan Your Arunachal Pradesh Trip?
Tell us your dates and our Arunachal team replies with a full day-by-day itinerary and the exact price, before you pay anything. We handle the Inner Line Permits, the 4x4, and the altitude pacing.
