Among all the other high altitude treks in Sikkim, the Sikkim Green Lake trek is the most picturesque and gorgeous as well. Originating from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, this 12 days trek continues to the Mt. Kanchendzonga Base Camp on the captivating Zemu Glacier. Most of the ascends and descends in this trek takes the participants through scenic patches of forests that are ornamented with rhododendrons, colourful flowers, rare orchids, pine and oak trees. Along the trek, the trekkers can also spot varieties of birds and scenic waterfalls.

Itinerary

After you arrive at the Bagdogra Airport, take a drive through the Sikkim-Bengal border line. Your drive will be alongside the stunning Teesta River. Arriving in Gangtok, check in into a hotel for an overnight stay.

On the morning, jeeps will take you through the North Sikkim Highway. After driving for around 6-7 hours, you will finally reach the gorgeous town of Lachen. On your way, you will through several tourist spots like Phodong Monastery, Tashi View Point, Cuungthang, KabiLongstok and Mangan. After arriving in Lachen, check in into a hotel for an overnight stay.

The trek for the day will start from Zema; a 20 minutes driving destination from Lachen. Arriving in Zema, get started with the very first phase of this trek and start hiking along the Zemu River that will take you towards west. As you will be trekking through the dense rhododendron forests and uneven terrains, the trek will be a slower one and will take you around 4-6 hours. On reaching Talem, you can also go for a short excursion around the region and discover its natural beauty; overnight stay will be in camps.

Today morning, you will be starting your trek from Talem to Jakthang. A 4-5 hours trek, it will take you through rhododendron forests of different colours. After your arrival in the Jakthang campsite, have lunch and relax for the rest of the day.

While on today’s trek towards Yabuk, you will be passing through dense forests. Trekking for around 3 hours, you will reach a point, from where you can enjoy the demanding views of the Zemu Glacier. Here onwards, trek for another 1-2 hours and reach the Yabuk campsite; overnight stay in the camp.

Today’s trek will follow the Zemu Glacier and takes you over the boulder laden terrains. Remarkable views of the deep Zemu Chu Ravine will keep you stunned all through the way till you reach the Rest Camp. Situated on the other side of the Siniolchu Mountain, you can also spot Blue Sheep and the local Bharal grazing around the mountains; the night will be spent in the camp.

Starting with a gentle climb through the valley, you will gain some height today. If the day remains calm and clear, you can also enjoy the gorgeous views of the Mount Siniolchu, Simovo, Twins and the glorious Kanchendzonga Peak. Trekking for around 5-6 hours, you will finally reach the Green Lake. Take in the alluring charm of the lake and enjoy the clear reflection of the Mt. Kanchendzonga on the lake waters before you sign up for your overnight stay in a camp along a flat grassy meadow beside the Green Lake.

After so much of tiring and exhilarating ascends and descends, today you will be spending the entire day relaxing and resting beside the Green Lake. Do nothing during the day, but enjoy the magnificent beauty of the nature, Mt. Kanchendzonga, Zemu and Talung valley.

After a rest day beside the Green Lake, today, start trekking back towards Yabuk; overnight stay will in the Yabuk camp.

Another day of trekking (4-5 hours) will take you back to Jakthang; overnight in camps.

Today will be the last day of trekking. With today’s trek, you will reach Lachen, where you will spend overnight in a hotel.

On the last day of the Sikkim Green Lake trek, you will be drive from Lachen to Gangtok; the trek ends as you reach Gangtok.
