Tsomgo Lake In July

In monsoon, it is advisable not to visit any hill station because of the high level of water. However, when it comes to visiting Tsomgo lake, July is the best time if you want to explore the incomparable beauty of blossoming landscape surrounding the sacred lake.

Tsomgo lake, or Changu Lake, is a holy waterbody located at the height of 12400 feet above sea level. The lake is 1 km long, and 15 metres deep and becomes a prominent tourist destination where people arrive to observe the bountiful magnificence of nature.

The literal meaning of ‘Tsomgo’ is ‘The Source of Water’ as it was formed with the water coming from the melting mountain glaciers. Furthermore, it is believed that the future can be foretold by looking at the colour of the water. Also, the water in the lake has certain healing qualities that make it sacred for local people.

The Temperature Of The Lake In July

Tsomgo lake is at a great height that rests in the cold weather of Sikkim. Therefore, even in monsoon, the temperature remains between -0.5 degrees and 16 degrees. It is recommended to take your waterproof jackets with you as it may rain unexpectedly lowering the temperature. However, the weather is moderate enough to see different species of flowers that includes renowned rhododendron and birds like famous Brahminy ducks.

How To Reach The Lake

It is easy to reach the nearest city, Gangtok, which is also famous as the heavenly capital of Sikkim. From Gangtok, one can make his visit to Tsomgo lake via the road covering approximately 40 km on Gangtok-Nathula highway. This 2-3 hours drive will leave you speechless as you observe every detail of nature in this scenic beauty.

Gangtok can be reached via both flight or train. The nearest stops that are Bagdogra airport and New Jalpaiguri railway station are in Siliguri which is 115 km away from Gangtok. From both the points, one can hire a cab to reach Gangtok.

Note- An inner permission is required for Indian Visitors to reach the lake, whereas foreigners need special permission for the same.

Food Facilities Near The Lake

There is not much to eat near the lake, but there is a stall which offers enough for what tourists would like to have. A few things are available at this point, such as Maggie, Momos, tea and more, that will add to the excitement you will have when you are standing under a shed and holding a plate of delectable snacks while it is misting.

Important Things To Keep In Mind

The lake is located at a great height where the level of oxygen is very low. Therefore, first, take rest for some time as soon as you arrive at the spot. Also, do not make a lot of physical effort as it may make you weak.

The trekking might cause you dehydration. So, you need to keep drinking water from time to time.

As it will be the month of monsoon, it is obviously to keep a raincoat with you as it will be raining. It is recommended that you should wear waterproof jackets because the weather will be freezing.

Make sure not to eat too much because this may make you sluggish.

It is requested to avoid alcohol and smoking as it may ruin the environment for others.

If you are anaemic, do not forget to carry your iron supplements.

In case you have breathing problems take an oxygen tank with you.

Before coming to the lake, consult a physician because this great height might turn out to be harmful to your body.

Wear sports shoes while coming here as they are both waterproof and comfortable.

Few Nearby Attractions

Tsomgo lake comes on the way to Baba Harbhajan Mandir which is 15 mins away from the lake. Baba Harbhajan Mandir is worth visiting because of its unusual story. The Baba, worshipped in the temple, was once a proud young soldier of Indian Army who lost his life in 1968. He was referred to as the ‘hero of Nathula’ who is believed to be still supporting the army in every problematic situation.

Nathula Pass is also another destination which is half an hour away from the lake. Nathula Pass was once used as a trading spot between Tibet and India. Today, this alluring picturesque hotspot would not allow you to put your cameras down. From this point, you can also see Chinese soldiers on the border and some spectacular mountain peaks.

Important Information To Consider Before You Visit These Places.

You need to take permission at least one day before visiting Nathula Pass. This permission should be taken for both the vehicle and the number of people making their visit. This is because the weather might block the way towards the pass. Also, a limited number of tourists are allowed to pay their call.

Nathula Pass can only be visited by Indian tourists which remains open only five days a week excluding Monday and Tuesday.
