One of Sikkim’s greatest highlight is the small town of Lachung in the northernmost part of the state. This little hamlet is remarkably beautiful. In Lachung’s vicinity is the famous Chungthang Monastery with magnificent architecture. It houses a rich collection of rare Buddhist artifacts and paintings. These two monasteries are popular tourist spots and lend an air of peace and quiet. On a nearby hill, is a sacred stone called Naydo. It has the footprints of Guru Padmasambhava and is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists.

A wonderful place to visit in this month of August is the Bhim Nala. These waterfalls are famously known as the “Amitabh Bachchan waterfalls” since his famous Bollywood movie was shot here. These waterfalls are filled in abundance and free flowing due to the rains. They make for a mesmerizing view with lush green forest cover and the Himalayas in the background.

One of the highest lakes in the world is only a short drive away from Lachung. Gurudongmar Lake lies at an altitude of 17,800 ft and the legend says that Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Bhutan visited this lake in the 8th century. The weather is unpredictable and it is advisable to visit the lake at early hours of the day.
