Losar festival or the Tibetan New Year is celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm in the city of Gangtok. This also marks the beginning of the harvest season. During this festival, people visit the monasteries and perform rituals with family and friends. The entire city is also filled with devotees greeting everyone with flowers. The residents also come out to the streets and perform traditional dance and sing folk songs. Various cultural shows are held across the state to celebrate this occasion.

During the month of February, the state of Sikkim also celebrates a tourism festival. How to Reach Gangtok

 

By Air: If time is limited then flight is the best option. Book a flight to Bagdodra Airport in West Bengal. Once you land at Bagdodra, you can book a taxi or helicopter ride to Gangtok. You can also book a flight to the newly launched Pakyong Airport. This airport is closer to Gangtok and is located in Sikkim. But since it is a small airport, not all flights land here, so check accordingly and book one that suits your needs!

By Train: The nearest railway station to Gangtok is New Jalpaiguri Railway station in Siliguri. There are a number of buses and taxis that travel daily from here to Gangtok. You may also book your own car and self-drive to Gangtok from here

By Road: If you are travelling to Gangtok from the nearby states then travelling by road is the best option. You can either self-drive or book a taxi to reach Gangtok. The journey by road is beautiful as you can enjoy the scenic view and also stop by various destinations. On the way you will also come across food joints that offer ‘Sikkimese’ delicacies. Do get your hands on them as you pass through the serene woods to reach Gangtok.

In terms of fun activities and things to do, Gangtok has a huge list. From places that offer scenic view of the mighty Himalayas to places that get your adrenaline rushing, the options are many. The city is also home to beautiful monasteries, temples, lakes and waterfalls that display the architectural and natural beauty of the city.

 

If you are in Gangtok during the month of February, head to Tsomgo Lake to witness the frozen lake and the snow-capped mountains that surround the lake. You can spend lovely time here unwinding and viewing the beautiful natural architecture. Also indulge in Yak ride here as that is one of the most unique activity offered in Gangtok. While on the well decorated Yaks, you can enjoy and explore the vicinity of Tsomgo Lake. You can also visit Baba Mandir located close to Tsomgo Lake.

 

Spend time sipping hot cup of tea and indulging in juicy momo at MG Marg. This is one of the most beautiful street in Sikkim. There are malls, pubs, cafes and street side delicacies to be enjoyed here. Spend an evening buying gift items for your loved ones or simply strolling the length here.

 

Want to enjoy a better view of the Gangtok city? If so, then take part in a crazy cable car ride. During this ride, you can get a glimpse of the city from above and also get the chance to enjoy the mesmerising view of the Himalayas. The snow-capped Himalayas are a delight to watch.

 

The city of Gangtok is also home to popular monasteries. So go ahead and spend time visiting these monasteries. Most of these monasteries are located on top of the hills, so enjoy the view you get from here. You are sure to find the peace of mind that you long for while in these monasteries. Some of the popular monasteries that you should visit are Rumtek Monastery, Pemayangtse Monastery, and Tsuk La Khang Monastery.

 

If you love adventure and the feeling of thrill then take part in Mountain Biking. Due to the hilly terrain, mountain biking is all the more fun in Gangtok. As you ride through the narrow paths, you can enjoy a view of the valleys and mountains. During these rides, you will also get the chance to visit and explore the forests and villages. Spend time in these villages and enjoy the laid back culture that is characteristic of the state.

 

Get your hands on the local handicraft items at Lal Bazaar. This market is located close to MG Marg and is one of the busiest streets in Gangtok. Spend time here shopping for authentic local items and clicking pictures. Here, you will experience people from different ethnicity thriving together. Enjoy the vibrancy that this place is filled with and melodious tune that takes over this market.

 

If you are a lucky and the weather is in your favour then you can also spend a day in Nathula Pass. Keep in mind that you require a permit to visit this place. It is in Indo-China border and is a beautiful place to visit due to the abundant snowfall that it receives. Spend time here unwinding and relaxing to the sound of nature.
