Meghalaya Beyond the Checklist
TL;DR: The root bridges, Dawki and the Sohra drive live up to the photos. The state rewards travellers who go one step further, and here is what you must know.
- Double Decker Root Bridge is a real trek, not a photo stop: About 3,500 steps down from Tyrna and back up, 3 to 5 hours. We hire Nongriat village guides and route slower groups to overnight there.
- Mawphlang Sacred Forest is guide-only: Protected by Khasi customary law for 800+ years, you cannot enter without a local Khasi guide. We book one who explains the plants, clan histories and matrilineal Khasi culture.
- Monsoon is underrated: June to September is when Nohkalikai (340 m) and Seven Sisters Falls run at full volume, with far fewer crowds. The catch is Dawki's river turns murky and some roads get harder.
- The bridges are grown, not built: Khasi communities train Ficus elastica roots across bamboo over 15 to 25 years; the oldest near Sohra are 200+ years old and strengthen with age. No other community does this at scale.
- Best time, plainly: October to early December for rain-free trekking and clearest Dawki water; March to May for mild weather; June to September for waterfalls. What suits you depends on what you want most.
Which season to pick, and what you get
| Season | What it is best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| October to early December | Rain-free trekking and the clearest water at Dawki | Peak demand; book stays early |
| March to May | Mild weather, comfortable for long sightseeing days | Waterfalls are not yet at full flow |
| June to September | Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters at full volume, far fewer crowds | Dawki's river turns murky and some roads get harder |

Meghalaya Tour Packages: FAQs
How much does a Meghalaya tour package cost?
Meghalaya tour packages cost ₹8,999 to ₹44,999 per person (as of August 2026), depending on duration and hotel category. A 2N/3D Shillong and Cherrapunji trip starts at ₹8,999; a 4N/5D adding Dawki and Mawlynnong is around ₹19,999. Flights and train fares are not included.
What is included in your Meghalaya tour packages?
Hotels with breakfast, all transfers and sightseeing in a private AC cab, airport or railway pick-up and drop, and applicable taxes. Not included: airfare or train fare, entry fees and activities unless specified, and personal expenses.
Can I customize a Meghalaya package?
Yes. Attractions, hotel category, extra nights, the root-bridge trek and a Kaziranga add-on can all be changed. Share your preferences on the enquiry form or WhatsApp and our team sends a revised itinerary and price.
How many days do I need for a Meghalaya trip?
4 to 6 days is the ideal duration. A 4N/5D covers Shillong, Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong comfortably; add a night for the Nongriat root-bridge trek. 2N/3D works for a quick Shillong and Sohra weekend.
Which season is best for a Meghalaya tour?
October to early December for the most rain-free days and clearest Dawki water. March to May is mild and good for trekking. June to September is best for full-flow waterfalls and green hills if you don't mind heavy rain.
Do I need a permit to visit Meghalaya?
Indian nationals need no permit for Meghalaya, including Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong (as of August 2026). Foreign nationals need no Inner Line Permit but must register at the Foreigners' Registration Office in Shillong. Carry ID copies for the Dawki border area.
How do I reach Meghalaya?
Fly or take a train to Guwahati (Assam), the main gateway, then drive about 100 km (3 to 3.5 hrs) to Shillong. Shillong's Umroi Airport (SHL, ~30 km from the city) has limited domestic flights, mainly via Kolkata. Most packages include the Guwahati transfer.
How much does a Meghalaya trip cost for a couple?
Roughly ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 total excluding flights (as of August 2026), so ₹8,999 to ₹44,999 per person by duration and hotel tier, plus return flights to Guwahati and spending money.
How does booking and payment work?
Pay an advance (amount decided at enquiry) to confirm after we finalise your itinerary; the balance is due before departure or on arrival, before services begin. The full itinerary is shared before any payment. We accept wire transfer (NEFT/RTGS).
What is your cancellation policy?
10% is retained for cancellations 30+ days before arrival, 30% at 15 to 29 days, 50% at 7 days, and no refund within 48 hours or for a no-show. Bookings for 20 Dec to 05 Jan and wildlife safaris are non-refundable.
