How to Reach Thimphu from Hyderabad by Air

When it comes to flight journeys to any of the tourist spots in Bhutan, you should always book your tickets to Paro International Airport as it is the sole international airport in the Land of Thunder Dragons. Also, due to the fact that Pao Airport has air connectivity with a limited number of airports in India, you would not be able to take a direct flight from Hyderabad to Paro.

From Hyderabad, you should first fly to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, Bodhgaya Airport in Gaya (Bihar), Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri (West Bengal), or Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (Assam). As all these airports regular flights by Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines, you can book air tickets to Paro International Airport from either of these airports.

Upon reaching Paro, you can board the local buses or hire private cabs to reach Thimphu.

Note: For foreign nationals, they can also book direct flights to Paro International Airport from destinations like Singapore, Bangkok (Thailand), Kathmandu (Nepal), and Dhaka (Bangladesh).

How to Reach Thimphu form Hyderabad by Train

Train journeys are indeed one of the best options to visit Thimphu. However, since Bhutan doesn’t have any international railway connectivity, it is not possible to book a direct train Thimphu from Hyderabad. However, if you are planning for a train ride to reach Thimphu, you can travel to some of the closest Indian railway station to Bhutan, and finally reach Thimphu via roadways.

Assam and West Bengal would be best points to travel from Hyderabad if you are yearning for a train journey to Thimphu. In West Bengal, you can reach up to Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri, New Alipurduar, Siliguri, or Hasimara railway stations. From any of these stations, you can enter Bhutan through Jaigaon town, and finally make your way to Thimphu from Phuentsholing town.

If you plan to take a train journey from Hyderabad to Assam, you should deboard the train at Bongaigaon Railway Station or enjoy your train ride till Guwahati Railway Station. From Bongaigaon, you can enter Bhutan through Gelephu point to reach Thimphu. And from Guwahati, you can reach Thimphu through Samdrup Jongkhar point.

How to Reach Thimphu from Hyderabad by Road

For a roadway journey form Hyderabad to Thimphu, you can start with a road journey from Hyderabad Kolkata. Upon arrival in Kolkata, you can take direct bus rides to Thimphu from the Esplanade Bus Stand. These buses are operated by the Royal Bhutanese Government, and takes around 18 hours to reach Thimphu.

In case, you don’t want to go for the bus journeys, you can begin with a road trip from Kolkata to Jaigaon in the Alipurduar district in West Bengal. After traversing around 705km (or 17 hours), as you reach Jaigaon, you can enter Bhutan through Phuentsholing town. From this town, you can either drive along the Thimphu-Bhutan Highway to reach Thimphu, or take a local bus ride to cover around 147km (4 hours) to finally land on Thimphu.

Let’s say you have already booked flights to Paro International Airport from Guwahati (Assam). In this case, you can embark on a road trip either from Guwahati or Bongaigaon town in Assam.

From Guwahati, you can drive up to Samdrup Jongkhar, which is around 150km (3 hours’ drive) away from Guwahati. From this point, you can cover another 419km (or 11 hours) to reach Thimphu. From Bongaigaon, you can enter Bhutan through Gelephu point, which is located only 50km from Bongaigaon. From Gelephu, you should drive another 243km (7 hours) to reach Thimphu by road.
