BHUTAN BY TRAIN

Adorned and enchanted by the miraculous beauty of Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan – the Happiest Himalayan Kingdom, is an emerging tourist hub in the country. Known for its untouched beauty, enchanting beauty, lofty peaks and scenic valleys, kaleidoscopic history, spirituality, and pleasant locals, this country is a blissful destination for almost all the types of travellers.

If you too are planning for a trip to this country which if fondly called as the ‘Land of Thunder Dragons’, you should know that you can either take air journey, hit the road, or simply book tickets to reach Bhutan by train. However, among all the three options, train journeys are considered as the most exciting ways to reach Bhutan as these journeys takes the visitors through a mix of terrains.

Well, Bhutan as a country, doesn’t have any direct railway access; it doesn’t have any railway connectivity to India or any other foreign countries. Having said this, visitors can still book train tickets and reach out to their favourite travel destination via several Indian destinations.

Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri Town, Hasimara, and New Alipurduar railway stations in West Bengal are some of the closest Indian railway junctions and stations that can serve as ideal destinations to reach Bhutan by train. All these train stations have excellent network of trains coming in and departing out from across different parts of the country regularly. From any of these alighting points, visitors can take a roadway journey to Jaigaon town in Alipurduar district in West Bengal, and finally enter Bhutan through Phuentsholing town in the Land of Thunder Dragons.

However, Hasimara Railway Station is known to be closest station to reach Jaigaon by road. The station has a well-structured train connectivity with the rest of the country, which makes it easy for visitors to alight at Hasimara and reach Jaigaon which is almost 16km (30 minutes’ drive) away from the station.

Visitors can also book train tickets to Assam in India, and reach out to their favourite destination Bhutan through roadways. Guwahati and Bongaigaon city would be the two ideal choices to enter Bhutan through Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu point.
