How to Reach Paro from Delhi by Air

Air journey from Delhi would be best choice to reach Paro in Bhutan. You can book either a direct or connecting flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi to Paro International Airport in Bhutan. There are flights almost on daily basis between these two airports.

Both of Bhutan’s official air carriers: Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines have flights between Delhi-Paro. To note here, the connecting flights between these two cities fly via Kathmandu in Nepal.

Paro International Airport also has direct flights from several other foreign destinations. Druk Air also offers direct flight from Singapore, Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Bangkok (Thailand) to reach the picturesque Paro Valley in Bhutan.

How to Reach Paro from Delhi by Train

Delhi has a compelling railway connectivity with the rest of the country. However, since the Kingdom of Bhutan has no railway connectivity within the country or with any other foreign destinations, you cannot reach Paro directly from Delhi. In order to complete this exciting journey, you should book your train tickets from Delhi to either West Bengal or Assam. If you are planning for West Bengal, you can select Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, New Alipurduar, or Hasimara as your final station. Upon arrival at any of these railway stations, you can take a drive to a town called Jaigaon, which is located on the Ind-Bhutan border. From this town, you can make your entry to Phuentsholing.

Form Phuentsholing, you should drive another 143km (4 hours’ drive) through the Thimphu-Phuentsholing Highway to reach your favourite destination Paro.

In case, you are planning to enjoy your train ride till Assam, you should deboard the train either at Bongaigaon Railway Junction or directly at Guwahati Railway Station. From Bongaigaon, you can make your Bhutan entry through Gelephu point, which is around 50km (1 hours’ drive) away from Bongaigaon. From this point, you should embark on another stretch of drive through the Wangdue-Tsirang Highway to reach Paro; distance would be 250km (8 hours’ drive).

If you deboard the train at Guwahati Railway Station, you can count on the Samdrup Jongkhar entry point for your Bhutan access. This part of the drive would be around 150km (3 hours’ drive) from Guwahati). From Samdrup Jongkhar, another 459km drive along the NH-27 would finally take you to Paro in Bhutan.

How to Reach Paro From Delhi by Road

Though air and train journey can be called as the idealistic ways to reach Paro from Delhi, road trips have their own fun and excitement! And to experience this, you should first plan a road trip from India’s capital city Delhi to the ‘City of Joy’, Kolkata.

Here is a quick route map that would help you reach Kolkata from Delhi: New Delhi – Kanpur – Varanasi – Gaya – Kolkata.

Once in Kolkata, you can either board direct buses to Thimphu from Esplanade Bus Stand within the city limits. Run by the Royal Bhutanese Government, these buses take around 18 hours to reach Bhutan’s capital city Thimphu. Upon arrival in Thimphu, you would have the option to board the regular local Bhutanese buses or hire local taxis to reach Paro, which is located only 50km (1.5 hours’ drive) away from the capital city of Land of Thunder Dragons.

In case, you don’t want to take this bus journey and still wondering about how to reach Paro from Delhi by road, you can embark on a second leg of road trip to reach Jaigaon; a town in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district, from Kolkata. Jaigaon is located adjacent to Bhutan’s Phuentsholing town. This part of the road trip comprises of 705km (17 hours’ drive).

Upon arriving Jaigaon, you can collect a valid Bhutanese tourist visa, and make your entry into Bhutan. From here, you should drive along the Thimphu-Phuentsholing route to reach your desired destination Paro; driving distance would be 143km (4 hours).
