Zhongar Dzong
Bhutan has no dearth of magnificent structures, religious sites, monasteries, or even the common buildings that would testify the brilliance of its skilled craftsmen and artisans. While talking about the architectural marvels, one simply cannot ignore the ancient Zhongar Dzong in Mongar town. On the other hand, while mentioning the skilled craftsmen, the name of Zocchen Bala, the builder of Zhongar Dzong can put others into shame.
According to the folklores, once a king named Karpo Dung invited a famous architect named Zocchen Bala from Paro to build a fortress in the region. On searching several spots, the architect came across a bowl-shaped white stone on a mound that overlooked the Kuricchu. Thus, he named the place as ‘Zhongkar’ (Zhong meaning bowl, Kar meaning white), and selected the spot for the dzong.
However, the construction of the dzong gave birth to some of the most unfortunate series of events. It is believed that while the construction was going on, the cliff deity called Tsen tried to kill the architect, which he survived miraculously, and finally built the fortress within the next seven days.
Unfortunately, once the construction of Zhongar Dzong was completed, Zocchen Balip’s hands were chopped off and he was drowned to death. Locals say that while drowning, Zocchen Bala cursed the king and vowed to haunt to the dzong and its adjoining area. Though the Zhongar Dzong was once a testimony to Bhutan’s brilliant architecture, it is now on ruins. However, a visit to this fortress on ruins will tell you many stories and surely make it for a memorable experience.
