Trashigang Dzong
The ‘Fortress of the Auspicious Hill’ or the Trashigang Dzong is among the oldest fortresses in the entire of Bhutan. Located on a breath-taking ridge atop a hill that overlooks the gurgling Drangme Chhu and Gamri Chhu rivers, this magnificent dzong fortress was built in 1659 to defend the country against invaders from Tibet.
Secured by three steep cliffs on its three sides, Trashigang Dzong was built by Chhogyal Minjur Tempa, who was a ‘Penlop’ (governor) of Trongsa to fulfil the prophesy of Ngawang Namgyal. Legends have it that while invading the country, the Tibetan army opined that Trashigang Dzong is not located in the ground; for them, the dzong appeared to be built in the sky. The fortress has been a centre of politics and power in East Bhutan for over 300 years.
Trashigang Tshechu is one of the most celebrated festivals in Trashigang Dzong. A four-days’ annual festival, one should attend this festival to get acquainted with the different cultures and traditions of this region.
