Folk Heritage Museum

If you want to have a livelier glimpse of the Bhutanese way of life, you must visit the Folk Heritage Museum located in Thimphu. Founded by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck in 2001, this heritage house is set in a three-storied traditional building made out of rammed mud and timber that itself dates back to the 19th century. The building complex comprises of kitchen gardens, hot stone baths, paddy fields, wheat fields, and millet fields. The ground floor of the museum signifies a barn, the first floor signifies a safe store, and the second floor signifies a living and dining area.

Showcasing numerous Bhutanese traditional household items, equipment, and tools, you would surely get to revisit history while going through the collections of Folk Heritage Museum in Thimphu. Adding more, the fact that this museum resonates the true ambience of a traditional household, you would surely find it captivating each time you visit the museum.

Folk Heritage Museum also runs demonstrations that shows how ‘Markhu Tsene’ or Bhutanese traditional oil is extracted, how ‘Ara’ (local drink) is brewed, the roasting process of ‘Zaw Ngowni’ and ‘Tham Dhungni’. You can also join in for an open-air buffet lunch and dinner within the museum premises. However, in order to book these experiences, you should make advance booking with the museum authorities.
