Chorten Kora

Located around 2 hours’ drive away from Trashigang, Chorten Kora sits next to the Kulong Chu River in Trashi Yangtse. Dating back to the 18th century, the chorten is built in a similar way to that of the Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal, which is also known as ‘Jarung Khashor’.

Chorten Kora was built by Je Yonten Thaye over a period of twelve years. It was built to subdue a local demon that was harming the locals in Trashi Yangtse. According to the locals, after the demon was subdued, peace and harmony started became prevalent in the valley.

During every 15th of the first lunar month in Bhutanese calendar, devotees assemble near this chorten and walks all the way round the chorten. In addition to the Bhutanese locals, this festival of Dakpa Kora is also attended by Indian; mainly from Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
