Druk Wangyal Chortens
While travelling from Thimphu to Punakha or making your way to the astounding Dochula Pass, which is seated at an elevation of 3,100m, you will come across 108 memorial stupas or chortens. These chortens were built by the eldest Queen Mother, Her Royal Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk in the memory of the 108 martyred soldiers who laid down their lives fearlessly while fighting rebel groups from India in 2003.
Built in the form of stupas, all these 108 chortens are called as the ‘Druk Wangyal Chortens’, and are located at the top of the Dochula Pass. All the chortens are white stupas that have golden finials and elaborate paintings with annexes being painted on all of them. On your visit to these stupas, you can also take a walk around to reach its top and enjoy magnifying views of the Eastern and Western Himalayan range and some its staggering peaks.
