BEST TIME TO VISIT

Sonamarg experience three different seasons throughout the year: Summer, Monsoon and Winter. Summer usually starts in April and lasts till October with temperature rising from 9-340C. Monsoon makes its way during the month of July and brings in heavy showers till the end of September. Winter in Sonamarg usually begins in November and continues till March with a temperature range of -8 to 180C; during the winters, it becomes quite challenging to reach Sonamarg as it receives heavy snowfall during this period.

Except the winters, Sonamarg can be visited during the other two seasons. Ideally, April to November proves to be the best time to visit this amazing hill station.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SONAMARG

KRISHANSAR LAKE

This high altitude lake in Sonamarg reaches an astounding height of 3,710m and is perched amidst fascinating hills and mountains. Measuring around 1km in length, the lake serves as home to fish species like ‘brown trout’ and freezes down during the winters. With the advent of the summers, the melting glaciers and snows from its nearby mountains incites life to the frozen waters of this magnificent lake.

THAJIWAS GLACIER

Surreal and enchanting in its own ways, the Thajiwas Glacier is located around 5km from Sonamarg. One of the most easily accessible glaciers in the country, it is an ideal tourist spots to enjoy a sledge ride during the summers and witness the miraculous beauty of the snow during the winters; the base of the glacier also serves as a perfect camping ground.

ZOJILA PASS

Located 13,000 ft. above the sea level, it is one of the highest motorable passes in the world. A connecting pass between Kashmir and Ladakh, it lies in the western part of the Himalayas and is around 9km in length. Partially open during the winters, the thrill and enthralment of this pass often attracts the adventure seekers.

NILAGRAD RIVER

One of the mystical streams in Sonamarg, the reddish waters of the Nilagrad River is believed to have medicinal properties. With the Indus River as its final point, it is located within a close proximity to the Krishnasar and Vishansar lakes.

VISHANSAR LAKE

With captivating snow-clad peaks serving as the background, this beautiful lake in Sonamarg attains a height of 3,710m. Also called the ‘Lake of Vishnu’, this stunning lake freezes down during the winters and comes back to life during the summers, when the entire vicinity gets covered up by exotic and wild flowers. A visit to Vishansar Lake during the summers is a dream come true experience!

GADSAR LAKE

Among all the lakes in Sonamarg, this is one of the most appealing as well as disguised one! According to the locals, the lakes is the abode of a mystical creature that drags the shepherds along with their grazing sheep.
